4 Good Habits To Keep Your Pet Healthy This Summer | Hudson Veterinary Hospital - New York Veterinarian

Last updated 1 year ago

One of the best parts of having a pet is enjoying the outdoors with them. For dogs, veterinarians recommend at least one to two walks a day, and it’s so much easier and enjoyable to do so during a beautiful New York summer - but the summer can be dangerous to your pet.

Therefore, follow these tips to ensure you and your pet have a healthy, enjoyable summer.

Keep Your Pet Hydrated:

Be sure your pet always has water to drink. Take a collapsible bowl and give your pet a drink at least every 15 minutes. Water goes a long way to ensuring summer pet health and preventing an unnecessary trip to the animal hospital due to heat exhaustion.

Let Your Pet Rest:

Give your pets cool places to relax during the day. Never leave your pet in the car during the summer. Temperatures can rise to 120 degrees in just a few minutes. If your dog usually stays outside, consider letting it come inside during the hottest part of the day.

Keep Your Pet Groomed:

Pet grooming is often overlooked during the summer. Some pets need sunscreen, and many pets need a little help shedding that winter coat to prevent overheating. Comb your pet’s hair, or take it in for a full summer pet grooming service.

Beware of Pests:

Watch out for insects and snakes. Insects can give your pet irritating itches and rashes that can cause it to scratch and chew its fur raw. Mosquitos can transmit heartworms, so be cautious about stagnant water around your house.
