4 Common Dog Ailments

Like humans, dogs can show symptoms of a diseases or sicknesses that warrant a visit to the veterinarian. Being able to identify what those warning signs are could prevent the onset of a more serious condition. Check out the following list of common dog ailments to learn more:

Kennel Cough

  • Also known as Bordetella virus, kennel cough is a highly infectious disease that results in severe coughing spells. Your dog can get kennel cough during any interaction with another affected dog, such as at the park or in a shelter. Fortunately, the disease is relatively easy to treat, although it can take some time.

Parvo

  • One of the most contagious dog diseases that affect all breeds is parvo. This virus is spread from contaminated feces that are carried on fur or paws. The best way to keep your dog safe from parvo is to make sure he has undergone proper vaccinations. If you notice excessive diarrhea and vomiting in your pup, make sure to see your vet immediately.

Distemper

  • Distemper is another viral dog disease that can be prevented with vaccinations. If untreated, this extremely contagious disease could prove fatal. Distemper affects the respiratory and nervous system, bringing on symptoms of fever, coughing, vomiting, and even seizures.

Giardia

  • Giardia is a common dog disease that is known to cause serious weight loss and poor weight gain. If your dog has drunk water from a contaminated lake or pond, he could be at risk for Giardia. You should talk to your local vet about monthly heartworm prevention pills to protect your dog against a number of intestinal parasites, including Giardia.
