Successfully training your dog can seem like a hopeless endeavor, but only if you’re going about it in the wrong fashion.
To train your dog successfully, follow these three tips:
1. Don’t Set Your Dog up to Fail
If a human parent started bemoaning about how his or her child just couldn’t say out of the cookie jar that had been left open on the coffee table, then your sympathy for that parent would be severely limited. And yet dog owners do similar things all the time. We expect dogs to immediately and completely adapt to our homes—homes that are full of delicious things to chew upon. Instead of expecting instantaneously perfect behavior, it’s a better idea for dog owners to remove most of the temptations from the dog’s presence. Of course, some items—such as the couch—aren’t so easy to remove, so it’s also a good idea to contain your dog while you’re away and can’t watch him. Some people recommend crate training for this, while others suggest blocking off small areas of the house using baby gates.
2. Don’t Use Force
Spanking, whapping, shoving your puppy’s snout into one of his accidents or otherwise using force against your dog is unacceptable—and ineffective. It won’t teach your dog how to behave: It will only teach him to fear you. He may behave while you’re around, but only because he’s learned that you’re a physical threat.
3. Distract Your Pet
The best way to keep a dog or a puppy from repeating bad behaviors is to distract him. For example, if you catch your puppy eliminating within the house, then clap your hands or otherwise make a loud sound that will startle him. While he’s stopped whatever he was doing to check out the noise you made, scoop him up or lead him outside where he can finish his business. This process can be performed with virtually any undesirable behavior. Simply remember to distract with a loud noise, and then redirect with a more appropriate behavior.

The Hands-on Approach
